Subway is a staple of the British high street, offering a variety of sandwiches in a customisable way. Their Christmas sandwich, the VIBrie (like VIP, but not a great pun unless it’s spoken out loud) is a sandwich containing bacon, brie, American-style cheese, peppers, caramelised red onions, and sweet onion sauce, served on white bread. On paper, it sounds really good. But at the Subway I went to, the reality fell far short.
It’s at this ingredients list I hit the first snag. My sandwich did not contain peppers, and nor did they ask if I wanted any. I was also asked what bread I wanted, so I said honey oat, but I was then told I couldn’t have that and could only have white or brown. Which is fine, but don’t give me the choice to then say I can’t have what I choose.
The sandwich (as you can see from the cover image) was thrown together with no real love, and ended up looking like crap.
But the important question: how did it taste?
Ehh. Fine. Nothing special though. I’m currently travelling for work so I get to claim food expenses, and that’s the only redeeming thing about this sandwich. The bacon was a bit greasy but otherwise plentiful, the brie tasted far more fungal than I’m used to, but that isn’t a bad thing as I like brie. The caramelised red onions were good, but sort of overshadowed by the large amount of sweet onion sauce.
Is it a bad festive choice? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But could you do better than the VIBrie? 100%.
